Speak English

In 1921, Chinese ambassador Wellington Koo visited America to represent China at the Washington Conference.
At one banquet he found himself seated beside a young woman who, after several minutes of embarrassed silence, attempted to begin a conversation:
"Likee soupee?" she asked.
Alas, Koo merely nodded and continued with his meal.
Some time later, he was called upon to address the guests - which he did for ten minutes in impeccable English.
Sitting down, he turned to his young neighbor and asked:
"Likee speechee?"
